Toen ik Angel oppakte 9 jaar geleden had ik nooit gedacht dat deze serie zo’n inpakt zou hebben bij mij. Ik las toen nog Nederlands en natuurlijk had ik alle Harry Potter boeken verslonden, maar ik denk dat dit mijn eerste echte epische YA was. Een jaar later kocht ik Angel Fire in het Engels, and I never went back. Ik was ook enorm blij dat ik haar op YALC kon ontmoeten.
Wat ik zo tof vind aan deze boeken is de relatie tussen Alex en Willow. Met alles dat ze meemaken blijft hun relatie gewoon heel normaal. Ze zijn enorm sterk, maar zoals iedereen hebben ze hun ups en downs. Helemaal als Seb in de picture komt. Willow voelt zich tot hem aangetrokken, maar hij is niet het enige obstakel. Alex zijn ex is de leider van de groep Angel Killers die ze tegenkomen als ze in Mexico City aankomen. Angel vond ik fantastisch, maar Angel Fire doet er nog een schepje bovenop. Waar Angel een introductie was van het verhaal, is Angel Fire the beginning of the end.
L. A.’s schrijf kunsten zijn fantastisch. Ik geloofde ieder woord en het boek liet me niet los lang nadat ik het uit had. Zij heeft de perfecte combinatie ontdekt tussen een heerlijk tempo, de perfecte hoeveelheid uitleg, prachtige woorden en sprinkeled with a little magic. Ik heb het boek dan ook in één zitting uitgelezen.
De nieuwe karakters die erbij komen zijn super tof. Je leert vrijwel alles over ze in dit deel en ook leer je nieuwe dingen over de karakters die je al kent. Ze voelen niet gevorceerd, they just are. Ze zijn wie ze zijn en ik denk dat dat één van de sterke kanten van dit verhaal is. Ook denk ik dat ze in Angel Fire een beetje opgegroeid zijn. In Angel voelde ze nog als awkward tieners, maar hier worden ze volwassen. Zo voelt het verhaal ook.
Ook houd ik van de cover. Op Angel zag je alleen Willow, maar nu krijg je Alex erbij. Deze Alex past dan ook precies bij het plaatje dat ik in mijn hoofd had van hem. De nieuwere covers vind ik een stuk minder.
Kortom, Angel Fire is een stap omhoog van Angel and it continues to burn in your mind. Pak deze serie op, want het is het zeker waard.

Sinds een paar maanden koop ik de Fairyloot boxen. Ik was voorheen kei fan van Celebrate Books (nog steeds) maar die kan ik helaas niet naar Londen versturen dus ben ik overgestapt naar Fairyloot. Disney en zeker Frozen is my jam, dus toen ik het thema zag en de illustratie die er bij hoorde was ik helemaal verkocht.
